Can hardly wait for the poppies to start covering the ground in so many places around where I live. The other day I drove on the road down to Santa Barbara and already many flowers were starting to bloom at the roadside. The wildflower display in the Santa Ynez valley and the mountains bordering it can be pretty impressive.

Another scene from my hike up in the hillsides above Cachuma lake in the Santa Ynez valley. I was fortunate enough to go there as the spring wildflowers were in full bloom. They created a wonderful carpet of color on the light brown grasses. My goal here was to capture the closer flowers, and using aeriel persepctive, push the distant ones back. This would add the depth to the painting that is seen here.

More fun with eucalyptus trees and adding poppies along a nice diagonal...not quite as steep as the last one I did a few paintings back. I actually love the sloping hillside a diagonal gives to a painting. A nice bit of tension and a welcome break from the flatlands. This was painted alla prima this morning using Lukas 1862 Paints...for those of you not familiar with the term "alla prima" it means to basically complete a painting from start to finish in one sitting.

Spring!

Spring has arrived here in the valley. In a drive the other day down to Santa Barbara I spotted the California poppies and lupine along the road and beginning to grow up the slopes. With all of the rains we had this winter this should be a great spring. Around her you have to enjoy it while it lasts because soon the summer will turn the hills nice and brown. Warm ochres are the norm here in summer and I love it!
